This is a pulmonary infection that may occur in malignancy. Serous fluid accumulates between the tissue layers in the pleural cavity, causing friction with every movement. This is called Pleural Effusion. Sometimes instead of fluid, pus accumulates in the pleural cavity. This is called Empyema. The movement of the ribcage is restricted and your patient will experience chest pain that increases with sneezing and coughing, laboured breathing, or shortness of breath.
